Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to La Antigua Guatemala
Upon landing, meet & greet at La Aurora International Airport by Birding Expeditions staff, and subsequently, transfer to the colonial city of La Antigua Guatemala.
Day 2: El Pilar Farm Birds & Butterflies tour
Starting with an early coffee break, we will board our transport towards San Cristobal El Alto to commence our birding and butterfly tour. Around 9:00 am, we will pause for breakfast, followed by a visit to an orchids collection and time for landscape enjoyment. Subsequently, we continue towards El Pilar Farm to visit a natural paradise where spotting some birds and butterflies, including various hummingbirds, is possible. Post-visit, we return to the center of La Antigua, Guatemala, for lunch. Afterward, you will have time for a cultural experience, exploring the secrets of the colonial jewel and its history.
Day 3: Tecpan Birding and Nature Tour – Continue to Huehuetenango
Initially, an early transfer towards the Tecpan area will occur to visit the pine-oak forest reserve that inhabits the beautiful pink-head Warbler and other birds. Upon our arrival, we will enjoy a local breakfast, after which we will be ready to discover the natural world of this destination. Following our experience at Tecpan, the journey will continue towards Huehuetenango, starting in 2000 masl and arriving at an altitude of 3600 masl. Lunch will be enjoyed on the route; then, we will proceed to our destinations near Todos Santos Reserve, offering an excellent opportunity for landscape, birds, and nature observation.
Day 4: Todos Santos Reserve – Quetzaltenango
After breakfast, we will head to Todos Santos Reserve, the endemic Goldman’s Warbler habitat. Here, we will have the opportunity to explore a unique natural world. Notably, Todos Santos is on the list of areas with the country’s most significant biological diversity and endemism. Numerous endangered species of flora and wildlife can be observed. Following this visit, we will head toward the city of Quetzaltenango.
Day 5: Fuentes Georginas – Volcan Zunil
Following a coffee break, we will transfer toward the slopes of Volcan Zunil in the quest for the endemic Horned Guan, Guatemalan Pygmy Owl, Black-throated Jay, and various hummingbirds, among others. This destination also offers the opportunity to observe butterflies, insects, lizards, and bromeliads. Subsequently, after the tour, we will head towards Los Tarrales Reserve.
Day 6: Los Tarrales Reserve
Los Tarrales, situated southeast of Atitlan Volcano, inhabits the localized endemic Azure-rumped Tanager. Here, you can find various kinds of forests from the altitudinal range between 2297 to 8200 ft. above sea level. This excellent bird-watching location inhabits resident species like White-bellied Chachalaca, Long-tailed Manakin, and more. Additionally, Los Tarrales Reserve is a crucial spot for conservation, and it has promoted bird monitoring and forest preservation of the location.
Day 7: Los Tarrales – Lake Atitlan
After a time for coffee and transfer to the La Rinconada area, it is possible to find species such as Long-tailed Manakin, Cinnamon Hummingbird, and Rufous-naped Wren, among others. Breakfast will be at the place (boxed breakfast). Midday transfer to Lake Atitlan will occur, with afternoon birdwatching around the lodge.
Day 8: Lake Atitlan – Monterrico
An early morning boat trip towards San Pedro La Laguna will take place, where we will get a pickup truck, which will bring you access to Paquisis Volcano. Here, we will start our hike to search for Horned Guan and various exciting bird species like Prevost’s ground sparrow, Amethyst-throated Hummingbird, and more. Meals will be supplied along the way (boxed breakfast). Subsequently, return to the lodge for a lunch break, followed by an evening birding boat trip in Lake Atitlan.
Day 9: Atitlan – Monterrico
In the morning, transport to El Rey Tepepul Reserve, a birdwatching location just fifteen minutes from your lodge, will be arranged. Here, it is possible to find species such as our National Bird, The Resplendent Quetzal, and others. Afterward, return to the hotel for checkout and transfer towards Monterico, with lunch en route.
Day 10: Monterrico – Bosque Seco
After a coffee break, we will take a boat trip to enjoy a birding morning adventure through the estuaries, mangroves, and dry forests. After a birding and nature tour, we will head towards Guatemala’s Dry Scrub Forest, with lunch en route.
Day 11: Dry Scrub Forest – Biotope
Following the early coffee break, we will head towards the reserve to conserve the Heloderma. After the expedition to the Heloderma reserve, we will continue towards the Biological corridor of The Resplendent Quetzal.
Day 12: Biotope – Guatemala airport – Flores – Tikal
An early birding tour around the biotope and Los Ranchitos del Quetzal will occur, followed by breakfast on site. Then, we returned to the lodge for check out and transferred to La Aurora International Airport for a short flight to Mundo Maya International Airport in the Peten area.
Day 13: Tikal National Park
An early birding and nature tour will be conducted, followed by breakfast at the lodge. Return for lunch at the restaurant area; then, we will enjoy a sunset tour with a high opportunity for wildlife observation after sunset. Return to the lodge for dinner.
Day 14: Tikal – Las Guacamayas Station
After an early wildlife and nature tour inside the park, visiting secluded areas, breakfast will be served. Afterward, we will head to Las Guacamayas station inside Central America’s most extensive wetlands.
Day 15: Las Guacamayas Station
An early hike around the lodge will be followed by breakfast. After breakfast, we will board our boat, which will take us to the entrance of El Peru trail, where we will start a hike under the rainforest. After the walk, we return to the riverbank for a boat ride around the San Pedro River and Sacluc Stream for wildlife and nature observation.
Day 16: Las Guacamayas Station – Flores – Guatemala city
Early breakfast and check out will be followed by boat and land transportation to Flores Island for lunch, then transfer to Mundo Maya International Airport for a flight back to Guatemala City. Lodging in Guatemala City.
Day 17: Back home
Transfer to La Aurora International Airport to take a flight back home.
