Pink Headed Warbler

Highlands birding hot spots

The best bird watching Tour at the High Lands.

Length:    5 days / 4 nights

Availability: All year round.

Places to visit and birds to emphasize:

Tecpan area (Pink headed Warbler)

Tecpan is located in the central highlands of Guatemala at an altitude of 7,500 meters above the sea level.  Tecpan signifying “Palace” in the nahuatl language, was the name giving to this town by the Spanish conquers.

Tecpan is an effortless and amazing birdwatching site where you can watch many endemics of the north Central American highlands species like Pink-headed Warbler, Blue-throated Motmot, and Rufous-browed Wren. During winter you will find the migratory Townsend's, Wilson's, Black-and-White, and Red-faced Warblers together with the resident Slate-throated Redstart, Pink-headed, Crescent-chested, and Olive Warbler, as well as Hutton's Vireo. The flocks are often accompanied by Spot-crowned, and sometimes by Spotted Woodcreepers, and also Brown Creepers. With some good luck you may see a Chestnutsided Shrike-Vireo within the flock. Bushtit dwells through the forest in large flocks of sometimes more than 30 birds.

Los Tarrales (Azure rumped tanager)

Los Tarrales nature reserve is an important area for the conservation in Guatemala. It is home to the endemic and endangered Horned Guan (Oreophasis derbianus) and the Azure-rumped Tanager (Tangara cabanisi).

Ram Tzul Ecological Reserve and El Quetzal Biotope (Resplendent Quetzal)

There are 21 microclimates in the cloudy wood in Guatemala, being this region considered the less impacted.

Ram Tzul Ecological Reserve has mountains of primary vegetation still virgin and others in process of natural regeneration by means of reforestation.

Around this area is easy to observe our National Bird, The Resplendent Quetzal
